Christmas in the Mountains Dec. 5-7

By Pam Porterfield
Friday, November 21, 2008

Come to the annual Christmas in the Mountains event Dec. 5 to 7. Various stores will be offering prizes, refreshments and special prices along the Donegal business corridor. The General Store will have live reindeer to noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 6.

Come see the Benners and the New Calvary Echoes from Knoxville, Tenn., at 7 tonight at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Calvary Church Road in Acme.

You're invited to a special movie event. The plot: Jay Austin wants to sell used cars in the worst way and that's exactly how he does business at his dealership. Promising much more than he can ever deliver. He'll do whatever it takes to sell a car, but as he works on restoring a classic convertible, he begins to see that God is working on restoring him as well. Coming face-to-face with the reality of how he truly conducts himself, Austin begins the ride of his life. The movie will be showing at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Critchfield Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, 471 Jim Mountain Road (Route 653 -- two miles from Normalville). Child care will be provided, and there will be refreshments following the movie. For more information, call 724-455-2284.

In this year's Pennsylvania budget a tax credit for businesses was extended to Subchapter S corporations and other pass-thorough business entities (such as limited partnerships and others) which pay their state business taxes under the personal income tax on Pa. business income which was previously only available to major corporations. This tax credit will allow you to redirect funds that you would normally pay to the state in Pa. Business Taxes to qualified scholarship organizations like the ICV Christian Children's Center Financial Aid Program. This program has limits on the amounts of credits issued. If you are a business that falls into this category, call Merle Skinner at 724-593-9200, ext. 103 to find out about this program or e-mail them at info@champion.org and put EITC TAX CREDIT in the subject line.

Last week's trivia question was: What is the long fleshy skin that hangs over a turkey's beak called? Dink Critchfield, Rollie Kaib, Russ States, Don Chearney, Jim Miller and Clara M. Miller called or e-mailed to answer. The answer I was thinking of was a snood.

This week's question is: What happens to the snood when the turkey is upset? If you know the answer or have a trivia question you'd like to ask, give me a call or send an e-mail.

Belated birthday wishes to Mary Trimboli, who celebrated her birthday Nov. 16; Shirley Smith and Gleneda White, who celebrated on Nov. 17; and Barbara King on Nov. 18.

Happy birthday to Steve Smith, who will celebrate his birthday on Nov. 28.

If you have news, give me a call by 6 p.m. Tuesday at 724-455-7746 or e-mail me at pamela@realcountrylife.com.

Have a very blessed Thanksgiving.
